My name is Gavin, although that’s probably obvious from the name of the site you’re currently on. I’m a self taught software engineer, with over a decade of experience, and 5 years working professionally in the field.

I’m 28 years old and I live in Richmond, VA — the river city. Aside from spending time learning new technologies and building iOS apps, I like getting outdoors in nature, hiking, trail running, and going to the gym. I also enjoy reading, and I’m practicing my skills with the goal of sharing more of my writing.

About my Site

I designed this website to be minimalist with a design that makes reading my posts easy. No ridiculous advertisements flashing around the sides of the page and no spyware or intrusive trackers (just Vercel’s extremely basic page view analytics and performance monitor). I also needed a website to host privacy policies and contact functionality for the iOS apps I’m building.

Without getting too technical (I’ll save that for upcoming posts) I built this site using Astro which is a really neat framework for building websites. I’ve used React and Next.js previously, but I find Astro to be even easier to use. I like how it’s very intentional and avoids a lot of the bloatware you get with other modern front end frameworks, while still providing access to some extremely powerful tools when you need them.

This website functions as my online portfolio, necessary hosting for the apps I build, a vehicle to showcase some of my writing, and a fun creative project I will continue to build out.
